Brake tape EM-1
Elastic material EM (ЭМ-1) GOST (State Standard) 15960-96
Elastic material EM-1 belongs to the group of rolled friction products based on asbestos; it is used for the manufacture of brake tapes and friction linings in the units of mechanisms and machines with an operating friction temperature of up to plus 200°C, a maximum pressure of up to 1.5 MPa. Produced in accordance with the technical conditions in accordance with GOST 15960-96 in all climatic versions (operable at temperatures from -60°C). Rolled material is characterized by increased elasticity and can be used in braking devices on friction surfaces with different radius of curvature.
According to the state standard, elastic materials are produced in three grades: EM-1 (for friction and brake linings designed to work under pressure up to 1.5 MPa), EM-2 (working pressure - up to 2.5 MPa) and EM-3 (working pressure - up to 0.8 MPa).
Elastic material EM-1 is produced in the form of a straight unpolished tape with a thickness of 5, 6, 8 and 10 mm, a width of 50 to 160 mm (with a multiplicity of 10 mm). The minimum length of one tape is 1000 millimeters. Lenas are rolled into rolls with a total length of no more than 8 meters. Both sides of an asbestos product are workable.
Symbol
The symbol of the product includes the name, brand, thickness and width of the tape in millimeters, the designation of the state standard. An example of the designation of a brake tape EM 1, 10 mm thick, 100 width, produced in accordance with the technical conditions of GOST 15960-96: EM-1 tape 10x100 GOST 15960-96

Safety requirements
Unsanded belts made of elastic material EM-1, with direct contact, do not have a noticeable effect on the human body. The material is not explosive, but flammable. Self-ignition temperature is +415 C. In case of fire, extinguishing by all means is allowed: water, sand, any kind of fire extinguishers.
When machining brake tapes, it is possible to release asbestos-rubber dust into the working atmosphere. The dust does not form toxic compounds in the air, is not carcinogenic or irritating, but has a fibrogenic effect. Maximum permissible concentration of asbestos-rubber dust in industrial premises:
- 10 mg / cm3 – max. one-time;
- 4 mg / cm3 - average per shift.
Those working with materials and products made on the basis of chrysotile asbestos must use personal protective equipment in the form of a respirator and overalls. It is recommended to use protective dermatological agents as additional protection (for exposed skin areas of the hands). Workshops, sections and other premises where the mechanical processing of brake bands of the em-1, em-2 and em-3 brands is carried out should be equipped with supply and exhaust ventilation systems, and the workplaces themselves should be equipped with local hoods. In this case, the air removed by local ventilation systems must be filtered before being released into the atmosphere.
Waste of elastic material belongs to the fourth hazard class, according to the requirements of the sanitary services, it should be collected and packed in paper or plastic bags, and taken to special landfills for burial.
Acceptance and marking
Brake tapes made of elastic material are accepted in batches of the same brand and standard size, with a total area of no more than 500 square meters. Each batch is accompanied by a quality certificate containing:
- trademark and / or name of the manufacturing plant;
- grade of material and tape dimensions;
- date of issue and batch number;
- the number of products in the batch (the total area in square meters is indicated);
- test results, certified by the stamp of the technical control section, indicating the compliance of products with the requirements of GOST;
- designation of the state standard in accordance with which the products are manufactured.
Each batch of products is tested in the following volumes:
- visual control - 100%;
- physical and mechanical properties - three rolls of tapes (from each batch);
- compliance with geometric parameters - five rolls of tapes.
Packing, transportation, storage
Unpolished brake tapes based on chrysolite asbestos are rolled up, tied with strapping material and placed in a wooden container. It is allowed to form transport packages with belts laying on wooden pallets.
Brake bands are transported by all types of covered transport in compliance with the rules provided for each type.
Unpolished asbestos belts must be stored in closed warehouses. Storage conditions - in accordance with GOST 15150-69.
Manufacturer's Warranties
Subject to the rules of transportation and storage conditions, the manufacturer guarantees the shelf life of elastic materials and products made from them for 5 years from the date of issue.
Technical differences between EM-1 and EM-K brake bands
Brake tape EM-1 (Elastic material, ferodo) GOST 15960-96, unpolished, rolled, black brake band. Used in brake friction units of machines and mechanisms under dry friction with a surface friction temperature of up to + 200 ° C, operating at a pressure of up to 2.5 MPa. Brake tape EM-K (Elastic material, ferodo) TU 2571-050-00149363-96, wear-resistant rolled red brake tape with brass shavings. It is used in brake friction units of machines and mechanisms with dry friction of material with a surface friction temperature of up to + 200 ° C, operating at pressures up to 2.5 MPa.
Rolled material is characterized by increased elasticity, the possibility of using it in braking devices with different radius of curvature of the friction surface.
EM-1, EM-K brake tape retains its operational properties in areas with a temperate, tropical and cold climate, at temperatures down to -60°C.
